What is 7S management?

7S management is an abbreviation for the seven words Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seikeetsu, Shitsuke, Safety and Speed/Saving. Because the first letter of these seven words in Japanese and English is “S”, it is referred to as “7S” for short. And activities based on tidying, rectification, cleaning, cleaning, literacy, safety, and conservation are carried out, and are called “7S” activities.

The “7S” activity originated in Japan and is widely implemented in Japanese enterprises, which is equivalent to the civilized production activities carried out by Indian enterprises. The object of “7S” activities is the “environment” of the site, which comprehensively considers the overall environment of the production site and formulates practical plans and measures to achieve standardized management. The core and essence of the “7S” activity is literacy, and without the corresponding improvement of the quality of the workforce, the “7S” activity will be difficult to carry out and persist.

7S Management Activities

(1) Sorting

Separating the people, things, and things that you don’t want and dealing with the people, things, and things you don’t need is the first step to start improving the production site. The main point is to classify the various items that are realistically placed and stagnant at the production site, and distinguish what is needed on site and what is not needed on site; Secondly, for the items that are not needed on the site, such as leftover materials, excess semi-finished products, cut heads, chips, garbage, waste products, excess tools, scrapped equipment, workers’ personal necessities, etc.,

It is necessary to resolutely clean up the production site, and the focus of this work is to resolutely clean up the things that are not needed on the site. For the front and rear of each station or equipment in the workshop, the left and right of the passage, the upper and lower parts of the workshop, the inside and outside of the toolbox, and the various dead corners of the workshop, it is necessary to thoroughly search and clean up to achieve the indispensable things on the site. Resolutely doing this step well is the beginning of establishing a good work style. Some Japanese companies put forward the slogan: efficiency and safety start with tidying!

The purpose of finishing is to increase the working area, Smooth logistics, prevention of misuse, etc.

(2) Rectification

Quantify and locate the people, things, and things needed. After sorting out through the previous step, the items that need to be left at the production site are scientifically and reasonably arranged and placed, so as to obtain the required things as quickly as possible, and complete the operation under the most effective regulations, systems, and the simplest process.

The purpose of the rectification activity is to clean and clear workplaces, reduce the time spent picking and placing items, improve work efficiency, and maintain an orderly work area.

(3) Sorting, rectifying, and cleaning

Clean the workplace and repair the equipment immediately if it is abnormal to return it too normal. The production site will generate dust, oil, iron filings, garbage, etc. during the production process, which will make the site dirty. Dirty sites will reduce the accuracy of equipment, cause frequent failures, affect product quality, and make safety accidents unpreventable; Dirty scenes will affect people’s work mood and make people reluctant to stay for a long time. Therefore, it is necessary to remove the dirt through cleaning activities to create a bright and comfortable working environment.

The purpose is to keep employees in a good working mood, and to ensure stable product quality, and finally achieve zero failure and zero loss in enterprise production.

(4) Cleaning

After sorting, rectifying, and cleaning, it is necessary to carefully maintain the site to keep it perfect and in the best condition. Cleaning is the persistence and in-depth of the first three activities, so as to eliminate the root cause of safety accidents. Create a good working environment so that employees can work happily.

The purpose of cleaning activities is to make sorting, rectification, and cleaning work a routine and system, the basis of standardization and the beginning of the formation of corporate culture of an enterprise.

(5) Literacy

Literacy is education, and efforts are made to improve the quality of personnel and develop the habit and style of strictly abiding by rules and regulations, which is the core of the “7S” activities. Without the improvement of the quality of personnel, activities cannot be carried out smoothly and cannot be carried out. Therefore, to grasp the “7S” activities, we must always focus on improving the quality of people.

Purpose: To enable employees to become people who abides by rules and regulations and has a good work literacy habit through literacy.

(6) Security

Clear hidden dangers, eliminate dangerous situations, and prevent accidents.

The purpose is to protect the personal safety of employees, ensure the continuous safety and normal progress of production, and reduce the economic losses caused by safety accidents.

(7) Effectiveness

It is the rational use of time, space, energy, etc., to maximize their effectiveness, so as to create an efficient and productive workplace.

  • Implementation should be based on three concepts: use what can be used as much as possible.
  • Treat the resources of the enterprise with the mentality that you are the master.
  • Do not discard it arbitrarily and think about its remaining use value before discarding.

Conservation is a supplement and guidance to the finishing work, in India, due to the relative shortage of resources, we should uphold the principle of diligence and thrift in enterprises.
